Playing Hollow Lantern Without Ruining It

June 26, 2026 · Marta Nowak

Some games are better the less you know, and Hollow Lantern is firmly one of them. It's an exploration adventure with no combat, where the whole point is noticing details and slowly understanding a place. Looking up puzzle answers strips away exactly what makes it good.

That said, a couple of gentle nudges won't hurt. The lantern isn't just for seeing — some objects only react when you hold it close, so if you're stuck, wave it near things. And the game never gates you badly, so if an area feels dead-end, you've probably missed a path, not a puzzle.

I finished it in about five hours and spent the last one just soaking up the atmosphere. The sound design does so much heavy lifting here; play it with headphones if you can.

My honest advice: go in blind, don't rush, and let yourself get a little lost. This is a game to sit inside, not to speedrun.
